The United States government has increased the reward for information leading to the arrest or conviction of Venezuela’s President, Nicolás Maduro, to $50 million.

Naija News reports that the announcement was made on Thursday by the Department of State and the Department of Justice under the Narcotics Rewards Programme.

The US is accusing Maduro of leading the Cartel de los Soles for over ten years, alleging that the group has been responsible for moving illegal drugs into the United States.

The U.S. Treasury Department recently classified the cartel as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist organisation.

American authorities maintained that Maduro has undermined democracy in Venezuela and unlawfully held onto power.

They also disputed his claim of victory in the country’s July 2024 presidential election, insisting that no credible evidence supports his win.

The U.S. said it cannot recognise him as Venezuela’s legitimate president.

The Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, in a tweet on Friday morning, wrote: “@StateDept and @TheJusticeDept are increasing the reward for the arrest of dictator Nicolás Maduro to $50 million for violating U.S. narcotics laws. Maduro is the head of the vicious Cartel de Los Soles, a narco-terror organization which has taken over Venezuela. Maduro MUST be brought to justice.”
