Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade, in collaboration with operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), have rescued a lecturer at Taraba State University, Engineer Joshua Saleh, from the grip of kidnappers.
Naija News understands that Saleh was abducted on July 31 along the Chinkai-Kente-Wukari Road in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State.
According to a statement released on Sunday by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations for 6 Brigade, Lieutenant Umar Muhammad, the rescue followed a well-coordinated joint operation which spanned several flashpoints, including Kente, Sondi, Yaku, and the Warawa general area.
“During the operation, troops encountered the kidnappers and engaged them in a fierce gun battle. Overwhelmed by the superior firepower and pressure, the criminals fled the scene, abandoning the victim. Engineer Saleh was found unharmed and promptly rescued,” the army spokesman stated.
The army noted that the operation was intelligence-led and specifically targeted at rescuing the abducted university lecturer.
“In a daring and well-coordinated operation, troops of 6 Brigade, NA/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, in collaboration with operatives of the Department of State Services, have successfully rescued Engineer Joshua Saleh, a lecturer at Taraba State University,” the statement read in part.
Reacting to the development, the Commander of the 6 Brigade, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, lauded the troops and DSS operatives for their swift and decisive response to the situation.
He urged residents of Taraba and the surrounding areas to remain alert and to continue supporting security agencies by providing actionable intelligence to help flush out criminal elements from the state.
The rescue of Saleh marks another success in the army’s counter-kidnapping efforts under Operation Whirl Stroke.
