President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assented to the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Bill, 2025.
Naija News reports that this is a landmark legislation to strengthen Nigeria’s financial sector and accelerate the nation’s march toward a $1 trillion economy.
This was made known in a statement on Tuesday signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025 repeals and consolidates several outdated insurance laws into a single, modern legal framework.
The new Act provides for comprehensive regulation and supervision of all insurance and reinsurance businesses operating within Nigeria.
This development reaffirms the administration’s commitment to financial stability, economic development, and inclusive growth.
2. Peter Obi: It Will Be Political Suicide For You To Come And Say You Want To Do 8 Years – Kenneth Okonkwo
Lawyer and politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, has declared that there is nothing wrong in the declaration by Labour Party chieftain, Peter Obi, that he would only be in office for a single term of four years if elected as President of Nigeria in 2027.
Speaking in an interview with Arise News, Okonkwo stated that the constitution provides for a term of four years, not eight years, and Obi’s statement is in accordance with constitutional provisions.
The veteran Nollywood actor added that the controversies generated by Obi’s declaration of intent to serve only for four years in office are a result of the distrust in Nigeria’s political system and that of many other developing nations.
Naija News reports that Okonkwo, during the interview, also recognised the constitutional provision that allows an elected official to seek another term of four years.
He, however, criticized politicians in the country for being overly eager to secure a second term, describing them as acting as if they have no other job.
3. Wanted Terrorist Bello Turji Surrenders Arms, Frees Captives
Notorious terrorist, Bello Turji, has surrendered some of his weapons and released 32 kidnapped victims.
Naija News reports that he took this action after a series of peace meetings with Islamic clerics in Zamfara State.
The meetings, held in July inside Fakai forest in Shinkafi Local Government Area, were part of efforts by residents seeking to return to their farms without fear.
The discussions were led by cleric Musa Yusuf, also known as Asadus-Sunnah, who said the talks were requested by the people of Shinkafi.
They pleaded with Turji to stop attacking farmers and allow safe passage into the forests for farming.
During the talks, Turji met with the clerics alongside his associates, including Dan Bakkolo, Black, Kanawa, and Malam Ila.
Contrary to rumours, Bakkolo is alive and was present at the meetings.
The group agreed to a peace deal and began surrendering weapons in stages.
They also gave access to farmlands across the river leading to Turji’s base.
As part of the agreement, 32 hostages, including women and children, were freed.
Some of the captives had been held for four months.
One woman gave birth in the camp, and another suffered a snake bite.
A video was shown to confirm their release and the path they took out of the camp.
Since the agreement, the Shinkafi area has been calm, with residents returning to their farms.
According to Premium Times, while Turji has not handed over all his weapons, the cleric who spoke during a religious meeting in Kaduna on Monday, said this was to avoid exposing him to rival armed groups that may not support peace.
4. Zoning Of Presidency Is Senseless – Sowore Blasts Regional Power Sharing
A former presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has described the zoning of the presidency to a particular region as senseless.
Speaking during an appearance on the Tuesday edition of Channels Television’s breakfast show, Sunrise Daily, he asserted that the country should be interested in a president who will run Nigeria better, irrespective of his region.
He argued that every presidential aspirant should be allowed to contest fair and square.
He maintained that certain parameters, such as qualifications and manifestos, should be considered rather than a person’s geopolitical zone.
5. ADC State Chairmen Slam David Mark-Led Coalition, Describe Move As ‘Civilian Junta’
The crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) deepened on Tuesday as state chairmen of the party issued a scathing condemnation of a coalition led by former Senate President, Senator David Mark.
In a statement jointly signed by the forum leader, Elias Adokwu, and Publicity Secretary, Godwin Alaku, titled “Rejecting the Political Junta by Defending ADC and Nigeria’s Democracy Against Subversion,” the chairmen described the development as a “blatant and reckless subversion” of both the party and Nigeria’s democratic principles.
Naija News reports that the chairmen accused the coalition of plotting an unconstitutional hijack of the ADC through “manipulation and backdoor dealings,” warning that the move was a mere disguise for selfish ambition.
They further described the attempted takeover as “an insult to all those who believe in and have laboured for democratic governance in Nigeria,” alleging that the group’s actions aimed to fracture the democratic process through “selfish ambition and extra-party inducements.”
Reaffirming their commitment to upholding democratic values and the rule of law, the ADC chairmen stressed that the party would never be used as a vehicle for “political mercenaries or ideological impostors.”
6. “Most Wanted Hired Killer” Olori Eso Remanded In Kirikiri Prison
A notorious criminal, Wasiu Akinwande, popularly known as Olori Eso, has been arraigned before the Ogba Magistrate Court by the Lagos State Police Command.
Olori Eso was arraigned on charges bordering on murder, unlawful possession of firearms, and other felonies, Naija News understands.
The development was confirmed in a statement on Tuesday by the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin.
The Police described the 44-year-old Akinwande as the “most wanted vicious and notorious hired killer,” who was arrested during a well-coordinated operation tagged Silence, Speed and Surprise, executed by the Command’s Tactical Squad at his hideout in the Agbado area of Ogun State.
Hundeyin disclosed that the suspect had been on the run before he was eventually arrested in Ogun State.
A large cache of weapons and other incriminating materials were recovered from Akinwande’s residence.

Nigerian actress Iyabo Ojo has petitioned the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, over alleged misconduct by officers of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF‑NCC) and VeryDarkMan.
The thespian accused the NPF‑NCC of professional breaches during her interrogation at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
In the petition submitted through her legal representatives, The Maverick Forte Legal, on July 29, 2025, Ojo claimed that during her recent interrogation with the police, VeryDarkMan, who is a civilian and defendant in another case in which she is a witness, was granted access to the room.
The document also claims that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Henry Uche, granted VeryDarkMan access to the interrogation room due to his improper relationship with him, noting that details of her private session with the police were leaked online by VeryDarkMan.
While vowing to stop attending sessions at the Abuja office, the actress called for the case to be transferred to Lagos, for an independent investigation, and for an end to “tainted and partial inquiry.”
Naija News reports that Iyabo Ojo was invited by the police for calling out Naira Marley over his alleged involvement in singer Mohbad’s death.

Naija News reports that Otedola revealed this in his forthcoming memoir titled ‘Making It Big: Lessons from a Life in Business’, which is yet to be released to the public.
In excerpts from the memoir seen by TheCable, Otedola recounted how multiple financial crises, including the global crash in crude oil prices, devaluation of the naira, and stock market collapse, wiped out a significant portion of his wealth, leaving his businesses deeply indebted.
Describing the drastic change in his fortunes, Otedola said banks once went to great lengths to do business with him.
9. Inter Milan To Submit Final €50 Million Bid For Ademola Lookman
Inter Milan are set to table a final offer worth €50 million for Atalanta forward, Ademola Lookman, as the Serie A giants intensify efforts to sign the Nigerian international.
Ademola Lookman, 27, is reportedly keen on joining the 2025 UEFA Champions League finalists, but Atalanta have so far resisted all advances.
Inter’s initial proposals, including a loan with a buy option and a subsequent €40 million bid, were rejected by the Bergamo-based club, which is holding out for a fee closer to €50 million.
The transfer saga took a new turn this week after Lookman submitted a formal transfer request and skipped training in protest. The forward also voiced his frustrations publicly on social media, citing poor treatment by the club.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport via FCInterNews, Inter Milan are now willing to meet Atalanta’s full asking price and will include bonus payments in their third and final proposal. The move would mark the Nerazzurri’s fifth signing of the summer window.
Atalanta, however, maintains that a previous gentleman’s agreement with Lookman only applied to offers from foreign clubs, not domestic rivals. The club is reportedly hesitant to strengthen a direct competitor in Serie A.
10. CHAN 2024: Eagles Lose Opening Match To Senegal
The home‑based Super Eagles recorded a disappointing 1-0 loss in their opening fixture at the 2024 African Nations Championship on Tuesday.
Naija News reports that ahead of the game, expectations were high as the two West African countries were out to prove a point.
The Eagles, as a powerhouse in African football, and amidst recent successes recorded by the Super Falcons, went into the match against CHAN defending champions, Senegal, with high hopes.
However, both teams struggled to gain control in the opening minutes, with Nigeria edging possession.
The first half ended goalless, and it was Senegal who took the lead through Christian Kobi in the 74th minute of the game following a defensive error from the Nigerians, and that was how the match ended.
The CHAN Eagles will face Sudan in their second Group D game at the Amman Stadium, Zanzibar, next Tuesday.
Earlier, Congo held Sudan to a 1‑1 draw in the other Group D fixture, meaning Nigeria are currently rooted at the bottom of the table.
