Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the Naija News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Sunday, 3rd August, 2025.

1. Again, Petrol Stations Increase Fuel Prices

Major filling stations across Nigeria have increased the pump price of premium motor spirit, popularly called petrol.

Naija News reports that this is coming after the upward adjustment of ex-depot prices by Dangote Refinery and depot owners.

It was gathered that Empire Energy and Ranoil filling stations in Abuja increased their pump price to ₦935 and ₦970 per litre, respectively, as of Saturday morning from ₦905 and ₦900 on Friday night.

Speaking to Daily Post, spokesman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Chinedu Ukadike, said the latest petrol price hike was due to an ex-depot price increase by Dangote Refinery and depot owners in Nigeria.

According to him, the increase in ex-depot price is due to the exchange rate and the price of crude oil in the global oil market.

Meanwhile, Nigerian National Petroleum Company and MRS, Optima, and AP Ardova filling stations still dispense petrol at ₦890 and ₦885 per litre, respectively, in Abuja as of the time of filing this report.

2. ‘How Tinubu Govt Stopped CJTF From Capturing Bello Turji’

A security expert and former chairperson of the Committee on Security and Prosecution of Armed Bandits in Zamfara, Sani Shinkafi, has accused the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led government of thwarting the capture of a notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji, by the Civilian Joint Security Task Force (CJTF) in Zamfara State, Nigeria’s north-west.

Naija News reports that Nigeria’s North-west has been plagued by a series of terrorist attacks by hoodlums locally referred to as bandits.

The bandits are often led by Bello Turji who has been terrorising the North-western states of Zamfara and Sokoto, imposing levies on helpless residents and killing many of them.

In response, the Zamfara State Government recruited hundreds of persons into the CJTF to complement efforts of conventional security operatives to fight banditry in the state.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, Shinkafi said the federal government halted an attack which would have resulted in the capture of the bandit leader and killing of his foot soldiers.

According to him, some village chiefs, during an operation, had deployed both CJTF and CPG operatives to a forest in Shinkafi Local Government Area of the state to battle Turji and his men.

3. ‘Ex-warlords Have Been Granted Amnesties’ – Tinubu Asked To Pardon Abba Kyari

The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) office in Nigeria has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to grant a presidential pardon to the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari.

In a statement on Friday issued by its Head of Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria, Duru Hezekiah, the IHRC asked Tinubu to free Kyari in the interest of national security.

According to the Commission, the call for his pardon became necessary following a rising wave of insecurity across the country, from terrorism and kidnapping to organised crime and armed banditry.

While reaffirming its respect for the ongoing judicial proceedings against the suspended DCP, the IHRC called for a national dialogue on the matter, in order to consolidate growing public and stakeholder support for a strategic and conditional presidential pardon for Kyari.

Hezekiah stated that the appeal is aimed at seeking consideration for the country’s strategic national interests.

4. APC Should Continue Underrating Us – ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has warned the All Progressives Congress (APC) against undermining its political prowess.

The spokesperson for the party, Bolaji Abdullahi, stated this while responding to claims that the APC had underrated the ADC for not having any state governors.

Speaking to Punch, Abdullahi warned that underestimating the opposition coalition is a mistake.

He asserted that the ADC is focused on building a solid country and presenting a valid alternative for Nigerians.

According to him, “It’s good. Let them continue to underrate us. When we started, they said it was dead on arrival. When we announced our coalition, they said they would give us six months. So, let them continue to underrate us. It’s better for us.

“But we are not underrating them; we are not underrating the challenges and the enormity of the task ahead of us. Because what we seek goes beyond ourselves; it goes beyond just winning the 2027 elections. It is not just to win power, but to build a solid country. So, we are not underestimating the challenges that we face.

“So, let them continue to underrate us. There is no problem.”

He noted that the party had started attracting new members even before the commencement of its aggressive membership drive.

5. ‘Any Attempt To Retain APC Beyond 2027 Would Spell Greater Doom For Nigeria’ – El-Rufai

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, stormed Sokoto State on Saturday to spearhead grassroots mobilisation under the opposition coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Naija News reports that El-Rufai attended two major events geared toward sensitising citizens and political stakeholders on the coalition’s agenda to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In his address to supporters and coalition members, El-Rufai stated that he is part of a patriotic movement aimed at rescuing Nigeria from the grip of incompetence and nepotism.

Taking a swipe at the APC-led federal government, the former Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) called it “a failed, clannish, and visionless administration that has plunged Nigeria into deeper socio-economic misery.”

El-Rufai stated it is time for Nigerians to rise against the APC, stressing that any attempt to retain the party beyond 2027 would spell doom for the country.

According to him, the coalition comprises technocrats, progressives, former governors, lawmakers, and civil society actors, whose collective resolve is to restore Nigeria’s lost dignity, unity, and prosperity.

6. ‘He Has Never Introduced Violence To The Game’ – Dele Momodu Speaks On Atiku’s Presidential Ambition

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain, Dele Momodu, has asserted that former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, is an ideal democrat.

Naija News reports that Momodu, in an article on his Facebook page, stated that since Atiku stepped down for MKO Abiola in 1993, he has continued to engage in politics with decorum.

He said Atiku, a key figure in the opposition coalition, became Vice President under President Olusegun Obasanjo, in a most fatalistic manner and never invested in thuggery.

Momodu said Atiku believes that politics is a game to be played ethically without rancour or bitterness.

According to the veteran journalist, Atiku, despite his several attempts at the presidency, never introduced violence

7. Viral Letter Fake, I Did Not Resign – Factional ADC Chairman Insists

The factional Acting National Chairman and former Deputy National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon. Nafiu Bala, has denied a viral resignation letter.

In a statement issued on Friday, Bala described the letter purportedly bearing his signature and dated May 18, 2025, as forged and misleading.

Recall that the David Mark-led ADC had dismissed Bala’s claim to the party’s chairmanship. It released Bala’s resignation letter as deputy national chairman on May 17, 2025, where he said he resigned his position for a smooth and effective coalition and restructuring.

According to the resignation letter, addressed to the party’s national chairman in Abuja at No.4 Oyo Street, Area II, Garki, Abuja, his departure took effect on May 26, 2025.

Bala’s resignation letter, as released by the ADC spokesman, was titled, “Letter of resignation as deputy national chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC)”

But in his statement, Bala dismissed the document as fake, attributing its circulation to “mischievous elements” both within and outside the party seeking to sow discord and confusion.

According to him, the ADC Constitution states that any aspirant for a leadership position must have been a financial member of the party for at least one year, emphasising that the rules governing party leadership remain intact and unchanged.

He also recalled that his predecessor, Ralph Nwosu, formally resigned at a gathering at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua centre and publicly confirmed Bala’s continued role within the party.

8. ‘There Is No PDP In Kano State’ – NNPP Chairman

The Kano State Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Hashim Dungurawa, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reached the “end of the road,” citing recent high-profile defections as evidence that the party is politically finished.

Speaking to journalists in Kano, Dungurawa said the PDP’s decline has become undeniable following the exit of its 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and his running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa, to other political platforms, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

According to him, “There is no PDP in Kano State. Even the APC that is ruling in the central government, now difficult to see an APC person is difficult in Kano State. Only one party in Kano State. We have NNPP as a party and we have Kwankwasiyya as an organisation where people are tripping into both the two, the party and the organisation.”

According to Stella, IVD was reportedly told not to leave Nigeria until the case is over.
