Tinubu, First Lady Salute D’Tigress After Historic Fifth AfroBasket Win

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu have led tributes to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, after their emphatic victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

D’Tigress, coached by Rena Wakama, beat Mali in the final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville on Sunday, clinching their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title, an unprecedented feat on the African continent. The win also stretched their unbeaten run in the tournament to an entire decade.

Reacting after the match, President Tinubu praised the team’s brilliance and unwavering spirit via his official 𝕏 account.

He wrote, “Superb performance to become 5x consecutive Champions of Africa and seventh overall. Well done, Coach Rena and the team. You have made Nigeria proud. I am expecting you all, along with the trophy.”

Naija News reports that President Tinubu had earlier dispatched a high-level presidential delegation to Abidjan to boost morale and show solidarity with the team. The delegation, led by Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, included lawmakers, ministers, and senior presidential aides.

Among them were the Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Kabiru Ahmadu; Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Suleiman; Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite; and Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Sunday Dare.

Also on the delegation were O’tega Ogra, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Digital Communications and New Media Strategy; Oyinade Nathan-Marsh from the Office of the Chief of Staff; and Kukoyi Olubusola from the Office of the First Lady.

In her statement, the first lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, described the D’Tigress as not just champions, but role models for a new generation of Nigerian girls striving for excellence.

“To God be the Glory for yet another victory for Nigeria as you bring home the second trophy won by the nation in two weeks,” she said.

“Today, you have written another golden chapter in our dear Nation’s sporting history by defeating Mali to win your fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title. With this win, you have showcased once again, the unwavering commitment and determination of Nigerian women on the global stage.

“You have continued to inspire every young girl to dream of breaking barriers and making history through hard work and dedication.
I celebrate you, your discipline, and team spirit. Thank you for making Nigeria proud once again. Congratulations, my wonderful D’Tigress!”
