Tension As Bandits Attack Sokoto Mosque

Armed bandits have reportedly attacked worshippers at a mosque in Marnona village, Wurno Local Government Area, killing one person and injuring several others.

Naija News understands that the incident, which occurred during early morning prayers, has heightened fears in the already volatile Sokoto East axis.

According to Vanguard, eyewitnesses said the attackers, armed with sophisticated weapons, stormed the mosque in the early hours, opening fire indiscriminately on worshippers.

The sudden raid forced residents to flee for safety as panic spread across the community.

Confirming the development, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State, Hon. Isah Sadeeq Achida, condemned the assault, describing it as barbaric and an act of cowardice.

“This attack is not only an assault on human lives but also on our collective faith and values,” Achida said.

“The perpetrators must be brought to justice, and we must remain united as a people to overcome this menace.”

Achida assured residents that the state government, in collaboration with security agencies, was making efforts to curb the menace of banditry.

He expressed sympathy to the victims’ families and prayed for the quick recovery of the injured.

Attackers Suspected to be from Border Forests

The media platform also quoted security sources to have revealed that the assailants might have come from camps located in the dense forests along the Sokoto-Zamfara border, known to harbour armed groups.

The bandits reportedly fled before security operatives arrived at the scene.

Naija News reports that the Sokoto mosque attack adds to a growing list of violent incidents in Sokoto East, which has suffered repeated raids, kidnappings, and killings in recent months.

Residents have called for increased military presence and a coordinated security response to restore peace.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements to security agencies. Security patrols have since been intensified, with local vigilante groups working alongside law enforcement to protect vulnerable areas.

However, the Sokoto State Police Command has yet to release an official casualty figure or confirm the number of those injured or kidnapped during the attack as of the time of filing this report.
