The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to stop announcing cash rewards in US dollars, describing the move as a sign of disregard for the Nigerian currency, the Naira.

The party’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, made this known on Tuesday in a post on 𝕏 while reacting to the monetary gifts recently given to Nigeria’s victorious national female football team, the Super Falcons, and the female basketball team, D’Tigress.

While thanking the President for recognising the athletes’ achievements, Abdullahi criticised the decision to denominate the awards in foreign currency.

He wrote, “We thank President BAT for amply rewarding our victorious Falcons and D’Tigress. But we find it strange that the President has repeatedly shown his disregard for the Nigerian sovereign currency by announcing the awards in US Dollars.”

Concluding his post, Abdullahi referenced the National Orientation Agency (NOA)’s advocacy against the abuse of the Naira, adding, “Mr. President, sir, NOA says, Stop the Naira Abuse.”

Naija News understands that, aside from the monetary gift, the President also conferred national honours on members of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress.

This follows their historic triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket Championship.
