Human rights activist and #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore, was allegedly manhandled by police officers at the Force Headquarters in Abuja during a heated confrontation over a physical search in the interrogation room.
Sources told SaharaReporters that Sowore resisted an attempt by investigators to physically search him, insisting on due process and proper documentation. The face-off reportedly escalated into a shoving match in the presence of his legal team.
Sowore, known for his vocal stance on human rights and anti-corruption, also demanded to see the original copy of the petition filed against him, reportedly over allegations of forgery and criminal defamation.
This request further infuriated the officers, who were visibly irritated by his insistence on proper procedure.
At the time of filing this report, Sowore had yet to be released. Police told him to wait for the arrival of a Deputy Inspector General of Police, sparking fears among his legal representatives that the delay was a ploy to detain him unlawfully.
Supporters of the activist have vowed to protest at the Force Headquarters should the police hold him beyond the time permitted by law.
Naija News reports that Sowore’s latest ordeal stems from a police invitation dated August 4, 2025, summoning him to appear before the IGP Monitoring Unit over allegations of forgery and inciting disturbance.
He refused to honour the invitation, describing it as legally defective, as it referenced a non-existent section (53(2)) of the “ACJA 2025” and an unrecognised offence under Nigerian criminal law.
Following backlash, the police retracted the flawed invitation and issued a new one on August 5, addressed to Sowore’s lawyer.
The updated letter dropped the charge of incitement and replaced it with charges of criminal defamation and forgery, with the meeting scheduled for August 6 at 11:30 a.m.
The letter also promised to present the petition in person, a promise yet to be fulfilled as of the time of this press release.
Travel Bag, Protest Readiness Signal Preparedness
Sowore appeared at the Force Headquarters with a travel bag, fully prepared for possible detention. In a statement ahead of his visit, he called on “freedom fighters and voices of resistance” to accompany him in solidarity.
The standoff follows Sowore’s participation in a protest organised by retired police officers and his recent accusation that a police cameraman stole his Ray-Ban Meta AI smart glasses.
The Nigerian Police Force has come under fresh criticism over what many see as a continued pattern of harassment against the activist.
Many Nigerians on social media have described the incident as yet another abuse of power, accusing the police of trying to silence a prominent voice exposing corruption and state misconduct.
Despite growing tensions, Sowore has vowed to continue his advocacy, maintaining that “no amount of intimidation will stop the revolution.”
