Son Heung-min is set to complete a move to Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC in a deal worth around £20 million, following his announcement over the weekend that he will be leaving Tottenham Hotspur after a decade at the club.
Naija News reports that Son Heung-min, 33, revealed his decision to leave Spurs this summer during a news conference on Saturday. Final details of his transfer to the MLS are still being discussed, but the move is now considered to be subject to a medical and the completion of paperwork.
Son is expected to become one of the most expensive signings in MLS history. If completed at the reported fee, the deal could surpass the £22.5 million Atlanta United paid to sign Emmanuel Latte Lath from Middlesbrough in February.
Son Heung-min who is under contract with Tottenham until 2026, made what is believed to be his final appearance for the club in a 1-1 pre-season draw against Newcastle United in Seoul on Sunday.
He was given a guard of honour upon being substituted in the 65th minute, with teammates and Newcastle players showing their appreciation.
Son joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 and went on to score 173 goals in 454 appearances. He captained the team to a 2-1 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final in May, helping the club win its first major trophy in 17 years.
Tottenham will continue their pre-season preparations in Germany, where they are scheduled to play Bayern Munich on Thursday. On the other hand, Son is expected to remain in South Korea briefly before joining LAFC.
