Political activist and public affairs commentator, Mahdi Shehu, has raised the alarm over what he describes as an impending storm ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that the political atmosphere is already tilting toward danger, darkness, and chaos.
In a strongly worded post on his official 𝕏 handle on Sunday, Shehu dissected the state of the nation’s politics, describing the emerging power struggle as delicate, dicey, dark, dangerous and chaotic.
Shehu warned that the convergence of political actors with conflicting pasts but a similar hunger for power will only heighten national tension.
“When characters with different history, similar records, diverse views, and unending appetite for power seek to dominate the political platform once again, one should expect a dangerous terrain,” he wrote.
He added that when sworn enemies and documented rivals suddenly unite for the “sole aim of grabbing power” in a country already divided along political, ethnic, and religious lines, the result would be nothing short of anarchy.
“When sworn enemies and documented rivals bury their enmity and venom against each other for the sole aim of grabbing power in an already polarised polity, then one should expect nothing short of chaos,” Shehu warned.
Recycled Leaders and Failed Promises
The political commentator did not spare the nation’s past leaders, who, according to him, squandered opportunities to improve Nigeria, only to return seeking relevance for selfish purposes.
“When characters who had the opportunities in the past to make maximum use of power for the benefit of the citizenry, but failed to do that, descended into the political arena for selfish reasons, then expect more darkness in politics,” he added.
Mahdi Shehu also lamented the endless recycling of political elites, who, according to him, are willing to use every means, fair or foul, to return to power.
He added: “The political battle will be delicate because many leaders keep recycling themselves in power at train, light, hurricane, plane or ship speeds, showing a strong desire to stay in control no matter what.”
He alleged that political players will deploy resources, blackmail, intimidation, treachery, assassinations, and arrests as tools to achieve their ambitions.
Despite his damning outlook, Shehu concluded on a reflective note, declaring that only God decides leadership, regardless of the desperation displayed by men.
“The Almighty God had long ago decided who will be what at all times and under all circumstances, no matter the chaotic situation, however, the desperation irrespective of the darkness, uncertainty and dicey circumstances, no matter the chaotic situation, how so ever the desperation irrespective of the darkness, uncertainty and dicey circumstances.
“Just look at the mixtures/combinations and nomenclatures below and pray to be alive with a valid voters card ready to discharge your obligations in a responsible and responsive manner,” Shehu said.
To further his assertions, Shehu highlighted the alignment across major political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
