Legacy FM, a privately-owned station in Ebonyi State, has reinstated its acting general manager, Godfrey Chikwere, days after suspending him over allegations of misconduct. The management confirmed on Monday evening that Chikwere will resume duty from August 12, 2025, reversing a decision that had sparked conversations about press freedom in the state. Chikweres suspension followed his repeated criticism of Governor Francis Nwifuru. At the time, Legacy FM accused him of displaying unruly behaviour and breaching the organisations code of conduct. The directive also instructed him to hand over all company property to the next most senior officer, a move many saw as punitive in nature. The development has drawn reactions from media stakeholders. Ayo Makinde, chairman of the Lagos chapter of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters (SNB), expressed concern over what he described as an increasing pattern of interference and attacks on broadcasters across the country. He argued that such actions threaten constitutional freedoms, erode public trust, and discourage citizen engagement in governance. Makinde pointed to other recent incidents, such as the order by Niger State Governor Umar Bago to shut down Badeggi FM 90.1, as evidence of a growing hostility towards independent broadcasting. He urged both government officials and media owners to safeguard journalistic independence, warning that undermining it would harm democratic development.
