Nigerian households continue to face varying prices for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, as filling stations across the country charge different rates depending on their supply costs and logistics challenges.

Market surveys indicate that Rainoil retail stations are currently selling cooking gas at ₦1,020 per kilogram, which is one of the lowest prices available this week. However, prices differ across other filling stations:

Some outlets sell for ₦1,050/kg

Others charge as high as ₦1,250/kg

These disparities largely depend on the landing price, the cost of transporting LPG from depots to retail outlets, and other market dynamics.

If priced at Rainoil’s ₦1,020/kg rate, the cost to refill various cylinder sizes would be:

1 kg – ₦1,020

3 kg – ₦3,060

5 kg – ₦5,100

10 kg – ₦10,200

12 kg – ₦12,240

12.5 kg – ₦12,750

Factors Influencing Cooking Gas Prices

Landing Cost: Differences in depot sourcing fees and transportation costs from coastal depots to inland stations directly impact retail pricing.

Foreign Exchange Rates: The importation of LPG and related equipment is sensitive to the naira-dollar exchange rate, resulting in increased costs when the naira weakens.

Distribution Logistics: Poor infrastructure and high trucking costs make LPG distribution expensive in some regions.

Seasonal Demand: During festive seasons or periods of high consumption, demand spikes can temporarily drive prices higher.

Market Competition: Retailers adjust prices based on local competition and their purchasing power in bulk.

The rising and inconsistent prices have left many households struggling to afford clean cooking fuel. This has forced some families to revert to using kerosene or firewood, raising concerns about environmental and health impacts.
