The Adamawa State by-election in Ganye Constituency on Saturday was marked by high voter turnout and peaceful conduct.
However, the exercise was overshadowed by a war of words between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) over allegations of vote buying.
Although polling commenced as early as 8:15 a.m., with voters, many of them elderly, standing patiently in long queues, the political atmosphere quickly became heated as party officials traded accusations.
Ganye Local Government Chairman, Farouk Mohammed, who spoke after casting his ballot, accused the APC of attempting to sway voters with money. “The All Progressive Congress APC chieftains are busy buying votes, because their government has failed woefully, so they don’t have what to tell Nigerians,” he told Punch.
The APC, however, fired back almost immediately. The party’s Adamawa State Organising Secretary, Mustapha Ribadu, denied the allegations and instead turned the spotlight on the PDP. Ribadu accused “the PDP of vote buying during the by-election.”
He insisted that the APC had the upper hand in the by-election and dismissed the PDP’s claims as political propaganda. Ribadu further commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for commencing the process on time and maintaining order at the polling units.
Despite accusations flying between the two parties, security operatives reported no major disruptions. Soldiers manned the streets of Ganye, restricting vehicular movement and maintaining calm throughout the local government area.
