Nigerian Nurses Give Condition To Suspend Strike

The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has declared that the ongoing strike by nurses across Nigeria has not been suspended.

Naija News reports that on Friday, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ali Pate, told journalists in Abuja that the nurses had ended their warning strike after discussions with government representatives.

However, the leadership of NANNM has stated that the industrial action remains in place.

The nurses, who began a seven-day warning strike on Wednesday, are demanding better pay, resolution of staff shortages, payment of pending allowances, and improved working conditions.

Their action followed a 15-day notice issued to the federal government.

Despite the health minister’s statement, NANNM’s leadership said the strike can only be called off through proper internal procedures, and that no final decision has been reached to end it.

The Association’s National Chairman, Morakinyo Rilwan, said: “If it was the Minister who organized the strike, then he could call it off. As far as I’m concerned, the strike organized by the association is still ongoing. The Minister didn’t organize the strike, so he doesn’t have the authority to call it off.

“There are procedures to follow, if it is to be called off at all.”
