The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State engaged in a war of words on Thursday over an alleged threat made by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, against the Alasi of Asi, Oba Olasunkanmi Oyewale.
Naija News reports that a voice recording that surfaced online earlier this week allegedly captured Egbedun verbally attacking and laying curses on the monarch during a phone conversation with a woman believed to be the monarch’s wife.
Reacting to the incident, the APC, through its spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, accused the Speaker of displaying aggression and blatant disrespect towards the traditional institution.
The party stated that Egbedun’s conduct had brought the image of the parliament into disrepute and called for his immediate impeachment.
The statement read, “If the type of Egbedun has been the one calling the shot in the Osun State House of Assembly, do we need to wonder the type of services that the supposed hallowed chambers would be rendering to the unsuspecting people of the state?
“With the verifiable uncultured attitude of the Speaker to the Alasi, the pungent reason for the ceaseless acts of misgovernace bedevilling the Governor Ademola Adeleke-led government can be partly traced to the state house of assembly under the watch of Egbedun.
“If the Speaker could treat his traditional ruler in such an obnoxious manner, one could imagine what the members of the Assembly where he has the constitutional power to do and undo are passing through which could not be divulged to the public.”
However, the PDP, in a release signed by its spokesperson, Oladele Bamiji, stated that Egbedun and Oba Oyewale’s disagreement was a private matter that should not involve the APC.
PDP said the voice note was taken out of context and claimed the Speaker’s reaction stemmed from earlier threats to his life, which have already been reported to the police.
The PDP said, “These threats, which have since been formally reported, are under active investigation by the Nigeria Police. We find the APC’s statement not only hypocritical but also a calculated attempt to weaponise a sensitive matter for cheap political capital. We strongly condemn such meddling and urge the APC to refrain from fanning the embers of discord in a matter that is already receiving the attention of relevant authorities.
“It is therefore reckless and dangerous for the APC to jump to conclusions and attempt to incite the public against the Speaker, all in a bid to stay politically relevant. We caution that such actions border on incitement and must not be taken lightly.
“We also urge the police to widen the scope of their investigations to include members of the opposition, particularly in view of the APC’s growing desperation to destabilise Osun State, having suffered an overwhelming rejection by the good people of the state.”
The party appealed to Oba Oyewale to show restraint and allow for a proper investigation, noting the long-standing cordial relationship between him and the Speaker.
“We remain confident in the capacity of the Speaker, Right Honourable Adewale Egbedun, to not only demonstrate leadership in reconciling with his father but also to continue to serve with integrity and focus as a representative of his people and the number one lawmaker in the state,” the PDP stated.
