Super Eagles of Nigeria forward, Victor Osimhen, made his long-awaited second debut for Galatasaray on Friday night but could not find the back of the net as the Turkish champions cruised to a 3-0 win over newly-promoted Fatih Karagumruk.
Osimhen, 26, who missed the opening-day victory over Gaziantep, started on the bench as coach Okan Buruk once again preferred in-form forward Baris Alper Yilmaz. Yilmaz, fresh from scoring twice last weekend, justified his selection by opening the scoring in the 10th minute.
Karagumruk’s task became even harder after Marius Doh was shown a straight red card following a VAR review in the first half.
Osimhen was finally introduced in the 61st minute to loud applause from the Galatasaray supporters. Although he showed sharp movement and good link-up play, the Nigerian forward was unable to get on the scoresheet.
Just 13 minutes after his arrival, however, the pressure he helped apply in attack forced defender Fatih Kurucuk into scoring an own goal to make it 2-0.
The night was wrapped up in the 87th minute when Mauro Icardi, who had only just come off the bench, netted Galatasaray’s third to seal a comfortable win.
Galatasaray are expected back on the pitch on Sunday, August 24, when they visit Kayserispor at the Kadir Has Stadium.
