Bay FC striker and Super Falcons star, Asisat Oshoala, has opened up on the football icons who shaped her journey, including two former Manchester United players.
Speaking in an interview on Arise News following Nigeria’s victorious campaign at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, Asisat Oshoala, the six-time CAF Women’s Player of the Year, didn’t hold back in her praise for past Super Falcons greats.
“Right now, if you Google players to see who has the most goals in the clubs, you have the likes of Perpetua Nkwocha,” Oshoala said.
“Those are the people that actually paved the way for someone like me to be able to come into the Super Falcons and enjoy certain things.”
She also mentioned former national team goalkeeper Precious Dede and midfield stalwart Rita Chikwelu as influential figures who created space for the current generation to thrive. “I was fortunate to play with some of them before they retired,” she added.
Having played for European giants like Arsenal, Liverpool, and Barcelona before her current stint with Bay FC in the U.S., Oshoala has carved her name into the annals of women’s football history.
But her journey began with male football idols, not female stars, largely due to the lack of visibility women’s football had during her formative years.
“I did not have a female idol that I looked up to when I was younger because the games weren’t televised,” she explained. “You don’t see them in newspapers, news, and all that. I used to follow the male teams, and I supported male sports people more. I liked Cristiano Ronaldo and Louis Saha.”
