The seven farmers abducted last Saturday at Itaogbolu in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State have been freed after spending five days with kidnappers.
The victims were reportedly working on their farms when gunmen stormed the area and whisked them away.
According to Vanguard, a relative of one of the abducted farmers, who spoke to newsmen on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the victims were released on Wednesday night.
“I’m happy to tell you that the kidnappers released all seven farmers on Wednesday night. They are back to their families,” the relative said.
He revealed that the kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of ₦100 million, which was later reduced to ₦20 million. However, the families were only able to raise ₦5 million along with food items before securing their release.
“They were released in Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti, on Wednesday night after collecting the ₦5 million and food items. The victims are now in the hospital for medical attention,” he added.
However, no official statements have been made by any security agency in the state, including the State’s Command of the Amotekun Corps.
Also, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, who was contacted by journalists, said he was unaware of their release.
