Obasanjo Library Gives EFCC Seven Days To Pay ₦2.5 Billion Over Alleged ‘Midnight Invasion’

The Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), demanding ₦2.5 billion in damages over what it described as an armed, ‘Gestapo-style’ invasion of its premises in the early hours of Sunday, August 10, 2025.

According to the library management, the raid carried out by operatives from the EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 not only disrupted business activities but also inflicted immense reputational and financial damage on the institution and its founder, former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

In a statement signed by OOPL Managing Director, Vitalis Ortese, the management accused the EFCC of storming the Rounda Fun Spot, a relaxation facility within the library complex, around 2 a.m. during a popular event tagged the Wet & Rave Splash Extravaganza.

Ortese alleged that the EFCC team, led by an operative identified only as Olapade, arrived in a convoy of about 50 armed operatives in several vehicles.

According to him, the operatives “came shooting indiscriminately and threatening to kill anyone who resisted,” creating chaos and sending guests fleeing for safety.

“The operatives arrived without any prior briefing to or cooperation with the OOPL security staff on duty. They fired live rounds in the air, ordering everyone to the ground, and proceeded to carry out mass arrests,” Ortese said.

During the operation, EFCC officials allegedly arrested 93 youths, impounded 18 vehicles, and seized numerous mobile devices. The OOPL claims that the attack left more than 100 people injured or traumatised.

Demands for Compensation

Naija News reports that the library’s management is asking for:

  • ₦2.5 billion as damages for reputational and business losses suffered by the OOPL and its chief promoter, former President Obasanjo.
  • ₦1 billion as compensation to those arrested and injured during the raid.
  • Immediate restitution for vehicles impounded and injuries sustained by more than 100 guests.

Public apologies from the EFCC Chairman and the Inspector-General of Police, to be published in at least five national newspapers, major television and radio stations, and across social media platforms.

“We are fully persuaded that the acts are aggravated, unconstitutional, oppressive, capricious, and arbitrary… calculated to wreak maximum damage on the legitimate business and financial interests of our client and its Chief Promoter,” Ortese stated in the letter to the EFCC.

Seven-Day Ultimatum

The management warned that if the EFCC fails to meet these demands by Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the matter will be taken to court.

“Should these demands not be met in full… we shall have no alternative but to proceed to court, and our claims will not be limited to the foregoing,” Ortese said.

OOPL’s Legal Adviser, Olumide Ayeni (SAN), said the EFCC team used live ammunition during the operation. He presented a beret and a bullet shell, which he claimed were recovered from the scene, as proof of gunfire.

According to Ayeni, the actions of the EFCC violated the constitutional rights of the guests and staff present during the raid.

However, as of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not issued an official statement in response to the allegations or the demands from the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.

The incident has sparked public debate, with many observers calling for transparency and accountability in law enforcement operations, particularly those involving high-profile institutions.
