The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has suspended Plateau United goalkeeper, Adewale Adeyinka, over allegations of involvement in betting activities.
The NPFL, in a letter signed by its Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, said the suspension was based on a formal complaint lodged by Plateau United against the player during the 2024/2025 season.
“We write to inform you of the immediate suspension of your registration as a player in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). This is due to the ongoing investigation into the allegation of insider betting made against you by your club, Plateau United FC,” the statement read.
According to the league body, suspicion deepened after Adeyinka allegedly refused to sign a contract with a prospective club, citing a clause on immediate termination in the event of betting implications.
“This reinforces our conviction that the allegation made against you… should be treated with the utmost seriousness and urgency,” Owumi stated.
Betting Prohibited Under NPFL Rules
Naija News reports that the NPFL reminded the player that Article 15.5, Section B of its Framework and Rules prohibits all players from engaging in betting, with punishments outlined under Section C.
“You will be invited to present your defence regarding these allegations in due course as the investigation proceeds,” the letter continued.
It added that Adeyinka’s registration would only be reinstated if the investigation cleared him of wrongdoing, warning that betting on matches in which a player participates “undermines the integrity of the league and brings the game into disrepute.”
It could be recalled that Adewale Adeyinka joined Plateau United from Kwara United at the start of last season and has been the club’s first-choice goalkeeper until the suspension was announced.
