The management of Nizamiye Hospital, Abuja, has refuted claims that it refused to perform a life-saving procedure on former Senator Ibrahim Musa Kontagora due to an alleged shortfall in payment.

Naija News reports that the hospital insisted that no surgery was scheduled and clarified it was not responsible for the advanced stem cell therapy that had been recommended to the late lawmaker’s family.

Senator Kontagora, who represented Niger North Senatorial District between 2011 and 2015, died at the facility after spending over a week in a coma.

Speaking with Daily Trust, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Mohammed Abubakar, described the report by an online medium as false and misleading.

He explained that the late senator was transferred from another hospital and was immediately admitted upon arrival.

“The day the patient was brought here, a shunt procedure was done to relieve blood clotting in the brain. There was no surgery planned beyond that,” Abubakar stated.

He noted that the stem cell therapy later advised by a doctor was not an in-house service.

“We don’t perform stem cell treatments here. It’s handled by specialists from abroad, and we only connect families with them if they are interested,” he added.

Reacting to allegations that the hospital demanded full payment of $30,000 before proceeding with treatment, Abubakar dismissed the claim, stressing that the facility does not charge in dollars.

“There’s no record of any $15,000 payment for stem cell or any outstanding balance. In fact, the family still has funds left in the patient’s hospital account,” he said.

The PRO further stated that no advance payment was demanded for any surgery or treatment after the shunt procedure.

The hospital urged the public to disregard the report, describing it as malicious and lacking credible evidence.

“If anyone insists there was a pending surgery or payment issue, let them come forward with proof,” Abubakar said.

He added that the motive behind the publication remained unclear and called for responsible reporting on sensitive health matters.
