D’Tigers: NBBF Releases 17-Man Provisional Squad For 2025 FIBA Afrobasket

Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, have received a morale boost from the National Sports Commission (NSC) as they begin their hunt for a second continental crown at the 31st FIBA Men’s AfroBasket, which gets underway today in Angola.

NSC Chairman, Shehu Dikko, assured D’tigers’ head coach Mohammed Abdulrahman and his squad that the Federal Government was fully behind them in their quest to dominate Africa’s basketball scene.

“This is to tell you that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR is solidly behind you. You carry the hopes of more than 200 million Nigerians. Play with discipline, patriotism, passion and togetherness, and know that your country stands firmly behind you,” Dikko said.

He urged the players to draw inspiration from the D’Tigress, who displayed remarkable grit at the recent Women’s AfroBasket.

“The Nigerian can-do spirit was very evident in the D’Tigress… We want you to carry that same never-say-die disposition into the Men’s AfroBasket. We have full confidence that, like your compatriots, you will also dominate Africa,” he added.

NSC Director General, Bukola Olopade reminded the 12-man squad of their proven track record.

“There is no doubt that you can do it. You have done it before, and we know you have the quality to do it again. Go ahead and make the nation proud,” he said.

D’Tigers have been drawn in Group B alongside defending champions Tunisia, Madagascar, and Cameroon.

Their campaign begins against Madagascar on Wednesday, August 13, before a heavyweight clash with Tunisia two days later, and a final group fixture against Cameroon on August 17.

The tournament, running from August 12 to 24, will feature 16 nations, with hosts Angola chasing a record-extending 12th AfroBasket title.
