Nigerian-born Beninese international, Razak Omotoyossi, has passed away at the age of 39.

His death was confirmed on Tuesday morning, though the cause has not yet been disclosed.

Naija News reports that Omotoyossi, who began his career in the Nigerian league, switched nationality to represent Benin and went on to establish himself as one of the country’s greatest-ever footballers.

He scored 21 goals in 55 international appearances, cementing his place among Benin’s all-time top scorers.

The late striker is best remembered for his exploits during the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where he scored all four goals in Benin’s stunning 4-1 victory over Togo.

He finished the campaign as joint top scorer alongside Cameroonian legend Samuel Eto’o.

Omotoyossi also made history as the first player to score for Benin at the Africa Cup of Nations finals.

At club level, Omotoyossi had an extensive career across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, featuring in leagues in South Africa, Libya, Egypt, Syria, Moldova, Sweden, and France.

He shone particularly at Helsingborgs IF in Sweden, where he featured in the UEFA Champions League, before later moving to French side FC Metz.

Omotoyossi’s death marks a significant loss for Beninese football and the African game as a whole. An official statement from Benin’s football authorities is expected in the coming days.
