Julius Abure Appears As Labour Party National Chairman In Meeting With INEC

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has expressed satisfaction with a court order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission to grant it access codes for uploading the names of its candidates ahead of the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections.

National Publicity Secretary of the faction, Obiora Ifoh, described the Nasarawa State High Court’s decision as “a welcome development” and “an order which will right the many wrongs meted out to the authentic leadership of the party.”

While commending the court’s intervention, Ifoh accused INEC of deliberately frustrating the party’s candidates.

He said, “We are, however, not happy that our candidates have not been given equal opportunity and time to campaign like other political parties.

“As it stands now, our candidates, due to reasons not of theirs, were prevented from campaigning. This is clearly a systemic route orchestrated by INEC to perpetually prevent Labour Party and their candidates from favourably participating in elections.”

Citing a past incident, Ifoh recalled that in Ondo State, INEC granted the LP governorship candidate access codes barely 24 hours before the election, alleging that such tactics had become a pattern the party would no longer tolerate.

Ifoh urged candidates to remain undaunted, describing the Labour Party as “a household name” capable of securing victory despite the challenges. He also called on members in affected states to show their “indomitable and never-die spirit” in returning LP candidates to office.

In suit No. NSD/LF.84/2024, delivered on July 23, 2025, Justice Mustapha A. Ramat of the Nasarawa State High Court ordered INEC to recognise Julius Abure and Umar Farouk Ibrahim as the authentic leaders of the Labour Party.

The interlocutory order also directed the electoral body to provide the faction with access codes to upload the names and particulars of its nominated candidates for the upcoming bye-elections and the FCT Area Council elections.

INEC has so far withheld the publication of LP’s nominated candidates for the bye-election scheduled for Saturday and the FCT council polls slated for early 2026.
