Former Oyo State governor, Rashidi Ladoja, on Monday emerged as the Olubadan-designate following a unanimous endorsement by members of the Olubadan-in-Council.
Naija News reports that the decision, reached at the newly built Olubadan Palace in Oke-Aremo, Ibadan North Local Government Area, marked a significant step in the city’s traditional succession process.
With this development, the formal confirmation of Ladoja’s ascension now rests with Governor Seyi Makinde, who is expected to ratify the council’s decision and fix a date for the presentation of the staff of office.
If approved, Ladoja will become the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The nomination followed the passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin on July 7, 2025.
In a historic move, Monday’s meeting was the first nomination to be held at the new Olubadan Palace, replacing the old venue at Oja’ba in Ibadan South East Local Government Area.
All beaded crown-wearing high chiefs were in attendance, although Oba Ladoja was absent.
The Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, formally nominated Ladoja for the throne, with the motion seconded by the new Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Eddy Oyewole, a position previously held by Ladoja.
Speaking after the meeting, Oba Ajibola said, “When one king transits, another one is enthroned. It is in line with the tradition of Ibadanland that we are holding this meeting today.
“It is on this premise that I, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, the Balogun of Ibadanland, nominated Oba Rashidi Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
“His nomination was seconded by the new Otun Olubadan, Oba Eddy Oyewole. We (members of the Olubadan-in-Council) have all signed and nominated Oba Rashidi Ladoja as the new Olubadan of Ibadanland.”
Oba Ajibola confirmed that the council’s resolution would be forwarded to Governor Makinde, who will determine the date for the presentation of the staff of office in line with the 1957 Chieftaincy Declaration, as amended.
He added, “The late Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, will be buried this week, so this week is not feasible.
“The governor may decide to pick three weeks, two weeks, or one week. The Olubadan stool cannot remain vacant for long; that is why we are glad with the decision of the council members.
“We are hopeful that the governor will not delay in assenting to the decision of the council.”
