Sudan head coach Kwesi Appiah has called on Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles manager, Eric Chelle, to work on his team’s attacking play after their 4-0 loss in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Tuesday.
Speaking to journalists after the Group D clash, Kwesi Appiah noted that Nigeria were not completely off the mark but lacked the cutting edge to convert possession into goals.
“The coach only needs to do some polishing with the attack,” Appiah said. “The first game against Senegal was not that bad. In the second game, they had stints of possession, but our approach helped us.”
The result put Sudan at the top of Group D with four points from two matches, while Nigeria crashed out of the competition without a single point, having earlier lost 1-0 to Senegal in their opening match.
Chelle, who took charge of the Super Eagles B side for the tournament, admitted his players made costly errors in both fixtures.
“We made a lot of mistakes and we gave up the game in the second half,” Chelle told reporters. “Four goals, four mistakes. We made a lot of mistakes in these two games [Senegal and Sudan].”
In Tuesday’s encounter, Sudan opened the scoring through an own goal by Nigerian defender Leonard Ngenge. Walieldin Khedr doubled the lead before Abdel Raouf netted twice to seal a comprehensive win for Appiah’s team.
Sudan will play Senegal in their final group match, a game likely to decide the top spot in Group D. For Nigeria, the early exit marks a disappointing CHAN campaign, extending their struggles in the competition where they last reached the final in 2018.
