An officer of the Nigeria Police Force, identified as Oboh Goodluck, has been reportedly shot dead by suspected cultists around the OMPADEC Road, Amarata axis of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
Naija News learnt that Goodluck, who was in mufti, was reportedly attacked in the early hours of Tuesday while returning from work.
The hoodlums were said to have attempted to rob him of his phone and other valuables before opening fire.
The Amarata community has been notorious for cult clashes since December 2024, when rival groups began a series of supremacy battles that have left residents on edge.
Following the killing, heavily armed policemen stormed parts of the area on Tuesday morning in a raid that triggered panic among residents.
Eyewitnesses told Daily Trust that the operatives shot sporadically and carried out indiscriminate arrests.
“Many families fled their homes to avoid being arrested. Our windows were smashed during the raid. The entire community is in fear of more violence,” a resident, who pleaded anonymity, said.
Community members have appealed to security operatives to act with caution, warning that excessive force could spark a wider breakdown of law and order in Yenagoa.
Amarata, a densely populated neighbourhood, has long been a flashpoint of clashes between cult groups and security agencies.
When contacted, the Bayelsa State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Muhammad, confirmed the killing of the officer.
“Investigation is ongoing to arrest those behind the attack,” Muhammad told newsmen.
Meanwhile, residents have called on the Bayelsa State Government and security agencies to step in quickly to restore calm and prevent further casualties.
