OGC Nice have withdrawn from a proposed move for Ghanaian forward, Ransford Königsdörffer, with the club’s decision reportedly shaped by their previous misstep in signing Nigerian striker, Terem Moffi.
Königsdörffer, 23, was on the brink of sealing a transfer from the German side Hamburger SV to the French Ligue 1 club. However, the deal collapsed at the final stage after OGC Nice’s medical team flagged concerns over his left knee.
According to Soccernet, sources close to the club say the caution shown this time around stems directly from how the Moffi transfer played out.
When Nice signed Moffi from Lorient in January 2023, initially on loan before finalising a €22.5 million permanent deal that summer, doctors reportedly identified a knee issue during medical checks, the club proceeded with the move regardless.
That decision backfired. In August 2024, Moffi suffered a cruciate ligament injury that ruled him out for six months. The Nigerian international struggled to regain his form after returning in February 2025, managing just one goal before the season ended.
Though Moffi scored recently in a pre-season match against Sheffield United, the long layoff and underwhelming return have made the club more cautious in the transfer market.
Despite Königsdörffer’s strong injury-free record at HSV, missing only two games in three seasons, Nice chose not to take any risks. The flagged issue, though not immediately threatening, was enough to raise red flags within the club’s hierarchy.
HSV board member Stefan Kuntz expressed surprise at the failed deal, pointing out that Königsdörffer has been under continuous medical supervision and had no recent fitness concerns.
“Ransford has been one of our most consistently available players,” Kuntz said, noting the forward’s steady involvement and good health under the care of UKE Athleticum.
Sporting director Claus Costa confirmed Königsdörffer remains an important player at the club, having contributed 17 goal involvements during their Bundesliga promotion campaign.
Although Königsdörffer had two minor knee injuries earlier in his youth career, he has since maintained full fitness and occasionally uses strapping on his left knee during games without any issues.
OGC Nice finished fourth in Ligue 1 last season and are set to face Portuguese side Benfica in a UEFA Champions League qualifier on Wednesday.
