Sunderland have completed the signing of Swiss midfielder, Granit Xhaka, from former Bundesliga champions, Bayer Leverkusen.
Naija News gathers that Granit Xhaka, 31, joins the newly promoted Premier League side on a three-year contract.
Sunderland will pay an initial £13 million for the former Arsenal star, with a further £4 million in potential add-ons.
Xhaka, who made 297 appearances for Arsenal between 2016 and 2023, returns to England after helping Bayer Leverkusen win the German Bundesliga title during the 2023-2024 season.
The Switzerland international will wear the No. 34 shirt at the Stadium of Light in the forthcoming season.
“I’m very proud to be here. When I spoke to the club, I was excited and I felt the energy, and the mentality that all the people and players have,” Xhaka said.
“It’s exactly what I wanted, and I have a very good feeling. We are back to where this club needs to be, and we want to stay here to write our own history.
“I feel that I’m ready to help the team with my experience but with quality as well.”
Xhaka’s move comes after the departure of Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso, which reportedly influenced his decision to return to the Premier League.
His arrival takes Sunderland’s summer transfer spending beyond the £100 million mark. He is the club’s seventh signing of the window, following the arrivals of Enzo Le Fée, Habib Diarra, Noah Sadiki, Reinildo Mandava, Chemsdine Talbi, and Simon Adingra.
