Germany’s 1990 World Cup Winner, Frank Mill Is Dead

Former West Germany international and 1990 World Cup winner, Frank Mill, has died at the age of 67 following complications from a severe heart attack he suffered in May.

His former clubs, Fortuna Düsseldorf and Rot-Weiss Essen, confirmed his passing in separate statements on Tuesday.

Mill, who enjoyed a decorated football career, also won a bronze medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and lifted the German Cup with Borussia Dortmund.

Although he did not feature in any match during the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, Mill was a part of the victorious West German squad that lifted the trophy under coach Franz Beckenbauer.

He earned 17 caps for the national team and was widely respected for his professionalism and consistency on the field.

In a tribute, his hometown club Rot-Weiss Essen described him as “a legend” and “an ambassador for football across the country.”

The statement read, “Frank Mill inspired a generation and represented the spirit of German football with pride. His contributions to the game will never be forgotten.”

Naija News understands that Mill becomes the second member of the 1990 World Cup squad to pass away, following the death of Andreas Brehme earlier this year.

Brehme famously scored the winning goal in the final against Argentina.

Mill’s legacy remains etched in the hearts of football fans in Germany and beyond.
