The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has dismissed as false and misleading a recent publication alleging that the Southeast region has been neglected in federal road infrastructure development.
The rebuttal was contained in a statement released on Monday by the Director of Press and Public Relations in the Ministry of Works, Mohammed Ahmed.
Umahi described the article, authored by Linus Anagboso, also known as D-Big Pen, and titled “The Politics of Asphalt: Why is the Southeast Missing from the Map?”, as mischievous and deceptive.
The former Ebonyi State Governor demanded an immediate retraction, insisting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been equitable in handling road infrastructure projects across all regions of the country.
“President Tinubu has revived 90 per cent of abandoned road projects, some dating back to 2013, and is still executing new ones without discrimination,” Umahi said.
Highlighting federal projects that cut across geopolitical zones, Umahi said four major Legacy Projects were approved to cover all six regions.
One of these projects, which runs from Cross River through Ebonyi, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Abuja, includes a 231.64-kilometre stretch within the Southeast, awarded at a cost of ₦445.8 billion.
He clarified that the Federal Executive Council recently reviewed the corridor length but maintained the same contract sum, accusing Anagboso of “deliberately misrepresenting this as an Oyo-Benue road to mislead the public.”
Ongoing Projects in the Southeast
Umahi listed major ongoing federal road projects in the Southeast, including:
- Second Niger Bridge Access Roads: Section 2A in Delta (₦146 billion) and Section 2B in Anambra (₦176 billion)
- Enugu-Onitsha Road (208 km): Funded through MTN Tax Credit at ₦202 billion, with CBC handling remaining sections for ₦150 billion
- Enugu–Port Harcourt Road: Divided into four sections covering Enugu-Abakaliki, Afikpo-Abia-Imo, Onitsha-Owerri-Aba, Aba-Ikot Ekpene, and Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene
“These projects clearly show that the Southeast has not been sidelined,” the minister asserted.
Umahi urged the people of the Southeast to support President Tinubu, noting that his administration has demonstrated fairness and love to the region.
He praised Southeast governors for their cooperation with the federal government and encouraged citizens to back them as they work toward securing second terms in office.
The minister also stated that while the Southeast would eventually produce a Nigerian president, “it will not happen in 2027.”
Reaffirming his stance, Umahi vowed to continue correcting false claims aimed at misleading the public about federal road development.
“There is no discrimination in the execution of federal road projects. Any claims suggesting otherwise are not only false but intended to deceive our people,” he concluded.
