Edo By-Elections: PDP Fears Defeat, We Have Torn The Umbrella Into Shreds - Says APC

A former chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, Augustine Ekanem, has resigned from the party, further unsettling its already fragile state chapter.

Naija News reports that Ekanem, renowned for his grassroots mobilisation prowess, confirmed his departure amid ongoing political realignments in the state.

Ekanem was elected APC chairman in 2021 after securing 1,278 votes at the party congress. However, his tenure was abruptly cut short when a Federal High Court in Abuja declared Stephen Leo Ntukekpo as the authentic state chairman.

The court subsequently ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw the certificate of return earlier issued to Ekanem’s executive committee.

Although Ekanem has not publicly stated his next political move, sources close to him, who spoke with BusinessDay, suggest that he may join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as part of wider opposition realignment efforts ahead of the 2027 elections.

During his leadership, Ekanem significantly boosted the APC’s influence in Akwa Ibom through robust grassroots engagement. However, persistent internal wrangling eventually led to his removal.

In other news, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant in Ekiti State, Emmanuel Fayose, has slammed his elder brother and former governor of the state, Ayodele Fayose, for endorsing the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Governor Biodun Oyebanji ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

Naija News recalls that Fayose, who wore a PDP-branded fez cap during a mega rally in Ado Ekiti on Monday, publicly endorsed President Bola Tinubu and Oyebanji for second terms in office.

Reacting to the development, Emmanuel, in a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, described the endorsement as a betrayal of the PDP, urging his brother to leave the party rather than ridicule himself in public.

Describing the rally as a “show of shame”, Emmanuel argued that despite the presence of former governors, defectors, and a rented crowd, the turnout was far less than 10,000 people out of Ekiti’s three million population, which, he claimed, clearly shows the people are tired of the APC administration in the state.
