Flood: Lagos Govt Sends Important Message To Lekki, Ikorodu, Ajegunle Residents

The Lagos State Government has issued a fresh warning to residents living in flood-prone lowlands of Lekki, Ikorodu, and Ajegunle, urging them to relocate to higher ground to avoid being victims of severe flooding predicted for this year.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, specifically advised residents in certain vulnerable areas to act swiftly.

He noted that while Epe, Mushin, and Ikeja are considered safe, residents of Isheri in the OPIC area must also remain vigilant as the city faces increased flood threats.

“Those around the Ajilete axis of Lagos, that’s Ajegunle, they have to move. Those around the coastline of Ikorodu; Majidu, have to move. Some areas around the Lekki corridor, too, not all,” Wahab stated.

The Commissioner explained that Lagos, as a coastal city, remains highly susceptible to the effects of climate change, including rising water levels and flash floods.

“Based on predictions by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Lagos will experience much more rain this year than last year,” Wahaba warned.

“For those who stay in the lowland of Lagos, they have to move to the upland pending when the rain recedes.”

Naija News reports that this warning follows widespread flooding on Monday after marathon rainfall that began Sunday night and persisted through Monday evening.

Viral videos showed submerged houses, vehicles, and streets in several parts of Lagos, with residents wading through waterlogged roads caused by clogged drainage channels and overflowing canals.

The severe flooding temporarily crippled trade and economic activities in Nigeria’s commercial hub, raising concerns about the city’s preparedness for heavier rains expected later in the year.

The government reiterated its commitment to enhancing drainage systems and flood management but urged residents to take proactive safety measures, including moving away from identified lowland areas to reduce the risk of displacement and loss during peak rainfall.
