Nigeria’s women’s basketball national team, D’Tigress have strengthened their claim as one of the most successful teams in the history of the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket after capturing their seventh continental title with a commanding 78-64 victory over Mali in the 2025 final.

Naija News reports that the win marks D’Tigress’ fifth consecutive AfroBasket championship, a feat no other team has achieved in the competition’s history.

This streak of dominance, which began in 2017, has not only extended their unbeaten run to 29 matches but has also pushed them further up the all-time winners’ list.

With seven titles, D’Tigress now sits second only to Senegal, who lead the chart with 11 trophies. But while Senegal’s golden years were spread across the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Nigeria’s rise has been recent, rapid, and consistent.

Nigeria’s rise from regional contenders to a continental superpower has redefined the women’s game in Africa. Just two decades ago, they had never lifted the trophy. Today, they are the team to beat.
