The Federal Government has announced the upgrade of its diaspora enrolment platform to enable more Nigerians living abroad to register for the National Identification Number (NIN) seamlessly.
Naija News understands that no fewer than 122 million Nigerians have so far been captured in the NIN database.
Lagos State tops the list with 12.7 million enrollees, followed by Kano (10.4 million) and Kaduna (6.9 million). Other top-performing states include Ogun (4.9 million), Oyo (4.5 million), and Katsina (4 million).
The Federal Capital Territory (3.8 million), Rivers (3.5 million), Delta (3.2 million), and Jigawa (3.1 million) also posted significant enrolment numbers.
At the other end of the scale, Bayelsa recorded the lowest enrolment with 767,620, followed by Ebonyi (999,991) and Ekiti (1.1 million). Others with low registration figures include Cross River (1.4 million), Taraba (1.7 million), and Yobe (1.8 million).
Men Registered Higher Than Women
Gender distribution data revealed a notable gap. Naija News reports that 66.9 million males (56.5%) have been registered compared to 51.5 million females (43.5%).
Despite the progress, Nigeria is still behind on its World Bank-backed Digital Identity for National Development (ID4D) project.
The country missed the June 30, 2024 deadline to register at least 148 million people, prompting a two-year extension of the project to June 30, 2026.
NIMC Explains Upgrade for Diaspora Enrolment
In a statement on Monday, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) said the upgraded NIN process would deliver “a seamless, robust, more secure, efficient and effective service” for Nigerians in the diaspora.
“Consequently, NIMC Diaspora Front-End Partners (FEPs) have been onboarded on the upgraded system with intensive training to equip the FEPs with the prerequisite knowledge on the application and effective management of the new system,” NIMC spokesman Kayode Adegoke said.
The Commission directed all diaspora FEPs to obtain and activate their NIN enrolment licences on the upgraded platform within 48 hours, after which diaspora applicants can access services from compliant FEPs.
NIMC apologised for any inconvenience caused during the platform upgrade and announced the creation of a dedicated service team to address all diaspora enrolment issues.
It also urged NIN holders to download the NIMC NINAuth App from iOS or Google Play Store to instantly verify their NINs, control who sees their information, and enjoy secure verification and authentication services.
