FG Needs ₦3 Trillion To Complete NNPCL-Funded Road Projects - Umahi

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has revealed that the Federal Government requires a staggering ₦3 trillion to complete ongoing road projects initially funded under the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) tax credit scheme.

Umahi made the disclosure on Wednesday during a press conference at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja, stating that NNPCL discontinued funding effective August 1, 2025.

He, however, added that President Bola Tinubu has directed the ministry to explore alternative financing models to ensure that no critical infrastructure project is abandoned.

“Our President is a man with a large heart,” Umahi said.

“Despite the funding stoppage by NNPCL, the President, as Chairman of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), directed that alternative funding mechanisms be put in place to ensure completion of all projects.”

Umahi disclosed that the ministry has compiled a list of all affected road projects and will soon submit it to the Presidency.

The projects, he said, may be repackaged under Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), where contractors demonstrate both financial strength and technical capacity.

“We are committed to ensuring that no project is abandoned,” the Minister assured.

The Minister also issued a stern warning to contractors who are stalling mobilisation to project sites, warning that the government would not entertain delays or manipulative tactics aimed at triggering project termination clauses.

“We will not leave the fate of our people in the hands of anyone playing games, hoping the federal government will step in with funds or default to trigger call-up options,” Umahi said.

Going forward, Umahi announced that any contractor removed from the site will be replaced within one week, as the ministry would no longer permit project stagnation.

He emphasised that the Tinubu-led administration remains committed to transparency, efficiency, and the timely delivery of infrastructure projects nationwide.

“Our ministry is fully aligned with the President’s directive,” Umahi declared. “We are working day and night to ensure that Nigerian roads are built to last and delivered promptly.”
