Former FC Porto captain and current Director of Professional Football, Jorge Costa, has died.
The club confirmed on Tuesday that Jorge Costa passed away following a cardiorespiratory arrest.
In an official statement, FC Porto expressed deep sorrow over the death of one of the most iconic figures in the club’s history.
“Futebol Clube do Porto expresses its deepest sadness and consternation at the death of an unavoidable figure in the history of the Club,” the statement read. “Jorge Costa personified, throughout his life, on and off the field, the values that define FC Porto: commitment, leadership, passion and an unwavering spirit of conquest. He marked generations of fans and became a major symbol of Portismo.”
The club also extended condolences to Costa’s family, friends, and all those who shared moments with him during his life and career.
“In this moment of immense pain, Futebol Clube do Porto addresses the most heartfelt condolences to Jorge Costa’s family, his friends and all those who shared unforgettable moments with him,” the club said. “As this is a moment of pain for his entire family and for the Porto family, we ask everyone for the modesty and respect required in this farewell period.”
Further details regarding his passing and funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in due course.
Jorge Costa, remembered as a commanding centre-back, captained Porto during one of the club’s most successful periods and later took up various coaching and executive roles. His legacy at FC Porto is widely regarded as one of the most influential in the club’s modern history.
“Jorge Costa’s legacy will always remain alive in the memory of all Portistas. You will never be forgotten, Captain,” the club concluded.
