The Edo State Police Command has arrested a serving police inspector and three civilians for allegedly terrorising residents of Benin through acts of brutality, extortion, and armed robbery.

The command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, disclosed this in a statement issued in Benin on Sunday, noting that the arrests followed a viral video where a victim accused some officers of abducting him, seizing his phone and belongings, and subjecting him to harassment.

According to Yamu, the state Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, immediately ordered an investigation after the report surfaced online.

“On 15th August 2025, operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team successfully intercepted the suspects with a silver-coloured Toyota Yaris and other incriminating items,” Yamu said.

He added that the culprits, including a serving inspector, had been linked to repeated acts of intimidation, extortion, and harassment of Benin residents.

Describing the development as “shameful and criminal,” CP Agbonika vowed that the suspects would face the full weight of the law.

“The command has zero tolerance for corruption, abuse of office, or misconduct within the force. There will be no hiding place for rogue elements within the police. Any officer caught engaging in extortion, brutality, or corruption will be dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted,” he declared.

Yamu further appealed to residents, including the victim featured in the viral clip, to assist the command with credible information to aid ongoing investigations.

He reaffirmed that the police remain committed to safeguarding lives and property, restoring public trust, and upholding the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force.
