Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez is on the brink of sealing a €53 million move from Liverpool to Saudi Arabian giants Al-Hilal.

Darwin Nunez, 26, is expected to undergo a medical in the coming days, marking the end of a two-year stint at Anfield.

Nunez initially arrived from Benfica in June 2022 for a fee that could rise to £85 million with add-ons.

Though he netted 40 times in 143 appearances, the forward struggled for consistency and started just eight Premier League games in the Reds’ title-winning campaign last season.

Al-Hilal’s offer brings much-needed financial flexibility to Liverpool, who are eyeing a marquee signing of their own, Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak.

The Magpies have already rebuffed an opening bid of £110 million, holding firm on their £150 million valuation of the Swedish international.

Liverpool’s summer dealings have been nothing short of ambitious. German playmaker Florian Wirtz arrived from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record £116 million, while French forward Hugo Ekitike joined from Eintracht Frankfurt in a deal worth £79 million. The club’s total transfer spending has now surged past the £250 million mark.

On the outgoing front, Colombian winger Luis Díaz departed for Bayern Munich in a £65.5 million deal, and young midfielder Tyler Morton has completed a £15 million move to Lyon. Harvey Elliott could be the next to exit, with interest building around the England U-21 star.

Nunez’s exit, however, closes a chapter that never fully lived up to its billing. Despite his mixed domestic form last season, only seven goals in all competitions, the striker impressed in pre-season, including a rapid-fire hat-trick against Stoke in July.

Interest in the Uruguayan has been widespread. Italian champions Napoli had expressed interest earlier this summer, and Liverpool reportedly turned down a £61 million bid from Al-Nassr in January.

At Al-Hilal, Nunez will join a star-studded lineup that includes former Premier League names like Ruben Neves, Joao Cancelo, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Yassine Bounou.

The Saudi club, managed by former Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi, finished second in the league last season and are aggressively strengthening ahead of the new campaign.
