Chelsea footballer Cole Palmers attempt to trademark his Cold Palmer nickname has run into opposition from French wine estate Chteau Palmer. The 23-year-old midfielder had hoped to secure legal protection for his goal celebration moniker and use it across merchandise including toiletries, clothing, and even alcoholic beverages. Chteau Palmer, a prestigious Margaux vineyard founded in 1814, challenged the trademark application, citing concerns over potential brand confusion, particularly regarding wine products. The winery, renowned for its Cru Class Margaux bottles, with some vintages priced at 750, argued that the footballers use of the name could undermine its long-established image.
Palmers application listed a broad range of products, including wines, spirits, liqueurs, and alcoholic beverages, which prompted the vineyard to intervene. Lawyers at the UK Intellectual Property Office will now review submissions from both parties before deciding on the dispute. Chteau Palmer was established by British Army officer Charles Palmer and has since earned a reputation as one of Bordeauxs leading wine estates. Royal wine merchants Berry Bros & Rudd describe it as a top-tier estate, ranking closely behind first-growth neighbour Chteau Margaux.
Palmer, who made his senior debut for Manchester City in 2020 and later joined Chelsea for 40 million, is not publicly known for his wine expertise. He previously featured in Manchester Citys squad that won the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League in 2023. The outcome of the trademark dispute will determine whether the footballer can legally use Cold Palmer for his planned merchandise and alcoholic beverages. The post Chelsea ace Cole Palmer in battle with winery over bid to trademark nickname and goal celebration appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
