Kenya and Tanzania have booked their places in the quarter-finals of the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) being co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Kenya’s Harambee Stars booked their ticket to the last eight with a game to spare in Group A, thanks to DR Congo’s 2-0 victory over Angola on Thursday. The result left Kenya at the summit with seven points, while Morocco and DR Congo trail closely behind with six points apiece.
Kenya holds the head-to-head advantage over both Morocco and DR Congo, having edged them 1-0 earlier in the group stage. This means the East Africans are guaranteed the top spot regardless of their final group result. Morocco and DR Congo will now face off this weekend in a high-stakes clash to determine who joins Kenya in the knockout stage.
In Group B, Tanzania became the first team to officially punch their quarter-final ticket, boasting a perfect record of nine points from three matches. The Taifa Stars have showcased both attacking flair and defensive discipline, making them early favourites for the 2024 CHAN title.
Meanwhile, the battle for the tournament’s Golden Boot is heating up. Six players currently share the top scorer position with two goals each: Allan Okello (Uganda), Thabiso Kutumela (South Africa), Abdelrazig Omer (Sudan), Kaporal (Angola), Austin Odhiambo (Kenya), and Clement Mzize (Tanzania).
However, the dream is already over for five teams: Zambia, Angola, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and the Central African Republic, who have been eliminated from the competition after two successive defeats.
