The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the distribution of sensitive materials to local government areas in Edo State in preparation for Saturday’s by-elections.
Naija News reports that the distribution exercise took place at the Benin branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), where political party representatives and members of civil society organisations were present to observe the proceedings.
Confirming the development, the Edo State’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Anugbum Onuoha, explained that it was important for all political parties fielding candidates in the elections to be involved in the process to ensure transparency.
“The exercise so far has been seamless, and we are fully prepared. The stakeholders present have expressed satisfaction with the handling of the materials,” Onuoha stated.
He added that the sensitive materials would soon be dispatched to the seven local government areas where the by-elections are scheduled to take place.
Meanwhile, factional National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has lambasted the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his directives regarding the by-elections across the country.
Naija News reports that Peter Obi had urged his supporters to vote for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the forthcoming by-elections.
Obi explained that his appeal is due to the LP having no candidates recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the ballot amid an internal crisis.
However, Abure, in a statement on Friday, described Peter Obi’s directive as misleading, mischievous and delusional.
Abure urged Labour Party members to disregard the directives of the former Governor of Anambra State, stressing that Nigerians now know his true personality.
While insisting that Peter Obi is responsible for the crisis in the party, Abure also accused him of receiving so much goodwill from the party leadership and turning around to pay them with evil.
He said, “The attention of the leadership of the Labour Party has been drawn to a statement by the party’s former presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi. Don’t listen to him.
“Nigerians have come to know who Peter Obi really is.
“This is why we have maintained that Peter Obi lacks the competence, character and capacity to actualise the vision of a new Nigeria.
“Nigerians should not forget in a hurry that it was Peter Obi that created the crisis in the Labour Party which he is now citing as a reason why people should not vote for the party.”
