Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has called for calm following protests by some Ghanaians demanding the deportation of Nigerians from their country.
Speaking during a joint press briefing in Ghana on Wednesday, Odumegwu-Ojukwu said viral videos of the protests had created unnecessary panic, prompting her visit for a firsthand assessment of the situation.
Naija News reports that Bianca said, “Since I arrived, I haven’t seen people burning tyres in the streets or carrying placards everywhere calling for Nigerians to be deported. This shows that the Ghanaian government and the president have stepped up to the situation.
“There’s no cause for alarm. They are handling the situation effectively, and we will continue engaging stakeholders.”
The minister explained that she had met with local leaders and individuals involved in the protests to help de-escalate tensions between Nigerian traders and their Ghanaian counterparts.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Ablakwa, also addressed the issue, assuring that the government is working closely with the Nigerian community to ensure peace.
“The Ghanaian government will ensure that everyone in the country, citizens and non-citizens, is protected,” Ablakwa said.
He, however, urged residents and foreigners to remain law-abiding and avoid actions that could “divide us.”
Over the weekend, a group of Ghanaian traders held a protest demanding that Nigerians be deported, alleging that their conduct conflicted with Ghanaian values and accusing some Nigerians of engaging in criminal activities.
The demonstrators carried placards and staged peaceful rallies in local markets, sparking diplomatic discussions between the two countries.
