Liverpool manager Arne Slot believes his side’s superior fitness proved decisive as the Reds began their Premier League campaign with a thrilling 4-2 win over Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday night.
The Dutchman watched his team surge into a two-goal lead through debutant Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo. Bournemouth, however, showed resilience as Antoine Semenyo struck twice in quick succession to drag the visitors back into the game.
With the match finely balanced, Liverpool found another gear. Substitute Federico Chiesa bundled home to restore the advantage before Mohamed Salah, so often reliable on the opening day, wrapped up the points late on.
Speaking afterwards, Slot praised his squad’s physical preparation and ability to outlast stubborn opponents. “We started the second half really well, being 2-0 up but we were playing against a team that never gives up,” he told BBC Sport. “You have to give credit to them but they faced a team that is very fit as well.”
However, former Reds defender Jamie Carragher warned that fitness alone may not be enough if defensive issues persist.
Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “Liverpool will score a lot and they will concede a lot too. They might be the most entertaining side in the Premier League. But if they perform like that, it will be very difficult for them to retain their crown. For me, they are far too open and vulnerable to the counter-attack. There is something that needs fixing.”
