A former governorship candidate of Zamfara State and member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, escaped an assassination attempt on Friday in Abuja.
He disclosed that the incident occurred shortly after Juma’at prayers on August 15.
According to the APC stalwart, masked, heavily armed gunmen dressed in black blocked his vehicle and attacked him before they fled the scene in a black, unmarked Prado Jeep.
Speaking via a statement, Shinkafi called the attack an “unprovoked attempt” on his life. He further alludes it’s related to his vocal critique of the insecurity in Zamfara State and other national issues.
“I will not be deterred by intimidation or harassment in the quest for national security, peace, unity, and social development.” Shinkafi emphasised.
He also stated that prior to this attack, there were also multiple threat calls received in his Abuja residence that he also believes were in connection with this attempt. He called on the Inspector General of Police and the DSS to investigate and punish the perpetrators and their sponsors.
Meanwhile, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State, Jude Ezenwafor, has claimed that surviving an assassination attempt is a sign that he is destined to be governor.
Sources who spoke to newsmen claimed that the politician was attacked near Wuse 2 on his way home from an appointment. He was seriously injured in the incident.
Speaking during an appearance on Arise News on Thursday night, Ezenwafor stated that the gunshot was a pure assassination attempt, adding that he is very traumatised by the event.
He revealed that the perpetrators shot him several times.
“They rained bullets all over my body, but I am bouncing back,” he said
The politician, who now uses a walking stick and limps, said it is related to the incident.
“Today actually is my first day to wear trouser. I’m bouncing back. it was traumatising,” he said.
Asked how he processed the news about his rumoured death, he said, “It was more a bit of lesson. A lesson in life, to know that I can always die any day, and that I’m not going to die soon.
“Because it’s a sign also that I’m destined to be the governor of Anambra state. [I’m] very confident about that.”
