Super Eagles forward and Atalanta star, Ademola Lookman, has officially confirmed that he has handed in a transfer request, citing what he describes as broken promises and poor treatment from the Italian club.
In a statement released on Sunday the Nigerian international, who played a pivotal role in Atalanta’s UEFA Europa League triumph last season, expressed his frustration with the club’s management, saying he has no choice but to seek an exit after months of failed assurances.
Lookman, 26, reflected on his journey at Atalanta since joining the club in 2022, saying he had poured his heart into representing the team and the city of Bergamo.
“Over the past three years at Atalanta, I’ve given absolutely everything. Not just as a footballer, but as a person,” he said.
“I’ve always worn the shirt with pride and tried to represent this club and the city of Bergamo with heart, passion and dedication.”
The winger added that lifting the Europa League trophy in Dublin remains one of the proudest moments of his career.
“It still gives me goosebumps thinking about it,” Lookman noted.
Despite his strong emotional ties to the club and its fans, Lookman stated that he believes the time has come to embrace a new chapter in his career.
“After three wonderful years in Bergamo, it is the right time to move on and experience a new adventure,” he declared.
He disclosed that the Atalanta hierarchy had previously agreed to let him leave should a suitable offer come in, but claims the club is now blocking his move.
“Despite now receiving an offer in alignment to what I believe had been discussed, sadly the club are blocking the opportunity for reasons I do not understand,” the Nigerian football stated.
‘Enough Is Enough’ – Lookman Alleges Mistreatment
In the most stinging part of his statement, Lookman accused the club of reneging on promises and treating him unfairly.
“After many months of broken promises and what I feel has been poor treatment towards me as both a human being and as a professional footballer, sadly I feel I have no choice but to speak out for what I believe is right,” he wrote.
“I can confirm I have now handed in a formal transfer request.”
The winger, who scored a memorable hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen, said he has kept silent for long but could no longer remain quiet.
“Even throughout the extremely difficult moments I’ve endured… I have always tried to put the club, the fans and the team first and hoped it would not get to this.”
‘I Am Sorry It’s Come To This’ – Lookman apologises To Fans
Lookman ended the lengthy statement with an emotional message to Atalanta supporters, praising them for their unwavering support.
“To the fans, the heartbeat of this club. I want to say this: I’m truly sorry it’s come to this. I hope you can understand this incredibly difficult situation.
“The support you have always given me has been incredible and the bond we have created together is special,” the player said.
Lookman revealed that several clubs have approached Atalanta in the past, but he had remained loyal.
However, this time, he believes both he and the club initially agreed that a fair offer would see him leave, an agreement he now claims has been ignored.
Naija News reports that Atalanta are yet to issue an official response to the player’s claims as of the time of filing this report.
