The Edo State Government has lampooned the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over its recent comments on governance and spending under Governor Monday Okpebholo, describing the party’s remarks as baseless, ill-informed, and laughable.

In a statement on Sunday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, berated the PDP and its spokesperson, Chris Osa Nehikhare, accusing them of attempting to lecture Edo people despite what he called the party’s years of misrule, monumental corruption, and gross incompetence.

He described the PDP as a dead and finished political party in Edo.

“The same PDP that had every opportunity to transform Edo but instead chose to plunder its resources, destroy public trust, and mortgage the future of our people now pretends to be the conscience of the state. Edo people are neither fooled nor interested,” Itua said.

He accused the PDP of leaving the state’s schools, roads, and hospitals in deplorable condition and driving away investors during its time in power.

Responding to allegations of wasteful spending on official travels, the government insisted that Governor Okpebholo’s local and international engagements were targeted at attracting investments and forging beneficial partnerships.

“Every kobo spent on official engagements is strategically aimed at forging partnerships, attracting investments, and securing opportunities that will yield long-term benefits for Edo people,” the statement read.

Itua contrasted the current administration’s approach with what he claimed were “shopping expeditions and family vacations” undertaken by PDP officials in the past.

The statement described Nehikhare as “the least qualified person in Edo State to talk about accountability, prudence, or governance, alleging that his political career was built on defending corruption and whitewashing incompetence.”

“The truth is simple: Chris Nehikhare is a political vulture feeding on the carcass of a dead party,” Itua said, adding that the PDP in Edo was finished and buried by the will of the people in the last elections.

The Okpebholo administration maintained that it was focused on reversing what it called the damage done by previous PDP governments by rebuilding infrastructure and restoring investor confidence.

“The PDP should first apologise to Edo people for the catastrophic years of its governance before daring to criticise a government that is working tirelessly to clean up their mess,” Itua said.

He urged the opposition to “accept its political obituary and rest in peace,” adding that the current government would not be distracted by “the wailings of expired politicians.
