‘How do you expect children to pass an exam that was written in the night? – Nigerian mum speaks out after WAEC result showed mass failure in Maths and English

A Nigerian mum has called on the West African Examination Council WAEC to address the mass failure of English and Mathematics by candidates who sat for the examination this year. In a video making the rounds, the woman said the failure was as a result the exam bodys inability to conduct the examination at the appropriate time. All you good mothers, please come out . It seems it will not well with those WAEC officials. The students who passed WAEC this year are not much. Most of them failed Maths and English. Is it supposed to be like that? When the students started English in the night and finished late into the night, is that how it is supposed to be? All the WAEC paper written this year is faulty. Good mothers come out let us shout together so they know how they will quickly address this. Where  is it done that students sit for exams in the night? All the WAEC papers the students wrote this year, none of them is good. Maths is bad, English is also bad. ALl good mothers, please g=come out and lend your voice. Do not say it doesn’t concern you If it doesn’t concern you now, it will concern you in the future. Let all of us come out and shout on their head” she saidThe West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, on Monday August 4, released the result of this year’s WAEC examination, The result showed that out of the 1,969,313 candidates who sat for the examination, only 754,545 candidates, representing 38.32%, obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. In the 2024 WASSCE, 72.12% of candidates obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. This years results showed a significant decline in performance, with only 38.32% of candidates achieving the same feat. Recall that on May 28, there was an outrage on social media after the students wrote their English paper parts II and III (objectives and theory)in the night. Videos of many students writing their papers in the dark with the aid of torchlights and candles made the rounds on social media. The examination commenced at 7pm and ended at 9pm as against the 4pm scheduled time.  The examination body apologised for the delay and pleaded with the students, their parents, and other stakeholders to forgive its wrongdoing.
