The stage is set for Home-based Super Eagles’ last game at the 2024 African Nations Championship at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Tuesday.
Congo, under the guidance of coach Barthelemy Ngatsono, are still chasing their first win of the tournament in Group D, just like the home-based Super Eagles.
Sitting third in the group with two points from two games, Ngatsono insists his side must be at their absolute best to secure a positive result against a determined Nigerian side.
“We respect Nigeria, but they are like a wounded lion. They will play with pride, so we must be sharper and stay focused,” Ngatsono told CAFonline.
The Congolese squad, led by striker Gosim Duvan Elenga, remains focused on clinching maximum points. “We enter this match with the same determination as before. We are ready,” Elenga told CAFonline, emphasizing Congo’s intent to advance to the quarter-finals.
For Nigeria, the stakes are different but no less significant. The Home-based Super Eagles have already been eliminated following defeats to Senegal and Sudan, and they are yet to find the back of the net in the competition, conceding five goals along the way.
Despite the disappointment, captain Junior Nduka insists the team will fight to end their campaign on a positive note. “We need a win for the country. We’ll give everything against Congo. The two defeats affected us, but we must bounce back,” Nduka said.
Kick-off is scheduled for 6pm Nigerian time, with both teams determined to leave the tournament with pride. Congo seeks a decisive victory to secure passage to the knockout stages, while the Eagles aim to salvage pride in their final match of the CHAN 2024 campaign.
