By-Election: Ex-Ogun PDP Chair Mocks Adebutu Over Polling Unit, Ward Loss

Former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Sikirulah Ogundele, has mocked the party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Ladipupo Adebutu, over his loss at his polling unit and ward in last Saturday’s by-election in Iperu-Remo.

At Adebutu’s polling unit, Iperu III in Ikenne Local Government, the All Progressives Congress (APC) secured 96 votes, while the PDP polled 60 votes.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) each had one vote, while the Labour Party (LP) recorded none.

The election was held to fill the vacant Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency seat, following the death of former lawmaker Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga in January after a brief illness.

The contest was mainly between APC’s candidate, Adesola Elegbeji, and PDP’s Bolarinwa Oluwole.

Ogundele, who recently defected to the APC alongside other PDP members, attributed Adebutu’s defeat to what he described as the mass exodus of credible members from the opposition to the ruling party.

According to him, the APC has become more formidable, well organised, and credible compared to the PDP.

“The outcome of the poll is a true reflection of the wishes of the majority of the electorate in Remo Federal Constituency, and by extension, Ogun people, who believe strongly in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and Governor Dapo Abiodun’s government,” Ogundele said.

The ex-PDP chairman further predicted that the party would continue to perform poorly in future elections, noting that Nigerians had lost trust in its leadership.

“The party will record more losses in future elections because majority of the people have lost faith in its current leadership both at the state and national levels,” he stated.
